Poll: Americans Are (Still) Confused About Health-Care Overhaul Law - Health Blog - WSJ

More than half of Americans say they don’t fully understand the health-care overhaul law, according to the latest Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll.

The 53% who say they’re confused is only slightly less than the 55% who reported the same last April, shortly after the law was passed. The confusion rate dipped to a low of 42% in June in the past year.

Last month’s Kaiser poll found that almost half of those surveyed thought — incorrectly — that the law had been repealed.

In general, people remain divided in their feelings about the law, with 42% viewing it favorably and 46% viewing it unfavorably, Kaiser says. And not surprisingly, people identifying as Democrats generally have a positive view, while Republicans are strongly opposed. Independents are split, though they’re leaning towards a negative view (49%) rather than a positive one (37%).

Dems To GOP: Show Us Your Health Insurance : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

With Republicans on Capitol Hill still trying every legislative manuever they can think of to undo last year's health law, it was probably only a matter of time before Democrats tried a gambit of their own.

Now a House bill being pushed by Democrats would require Republicans to publicly state whether or not they are accepting taxpayer-subsidized health benefits under the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program.

They're entitled to such coverage as members of Congress, but Democrats say it's hypocritical for Republicans who are voting to take health coverage away from millions of Americans to accept coverage subsidized by those same people.

Governors: Medicaid More A Budget Buster Than Ever : NPR

The federal government and the states have shared the cost of Medicaid, the health insurance program for some 60 million low-income Americans, since it was created in 1965.

They've shared something else almost that long — arguments about who should foot how much of the ever-escalating bill.

"Medicaid cost growth has been a problem for time immemorial," says Alan Weil, executive director of the National Academy for State Health Policy.

But this time, he says, things are different.

For one thing, "the program is bigger, so growth on a larger base is more real dollars that's harder to find."

Skip Dessert? Christie and Huckabee on First Lady’s Side

In the dessert wars, at least, Chris Christie and Mike Huckabee side with Michelle Obama, not Sarah Palin.

Some conservatives, notably Ms. Palin, have mocked Mrs. Obama’s campaign against obesity, particularly in children. But on separate Sunday morning news programs, Mr. Christie, the New Jersey governor, and Mr. Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor — both Republicans — defended Mrs. Obama, and Mr. Christie put his answer in personal terms.

“I think it’s a really good goal to encourage kids to eat better,” Mr. Christie said on “Face the Nation,” on CBS. “You know, I’ve struggled with my weight for 30 years, and it’s a struggle. And if a kid can avoid that in his adult years or her adult years, more power to them, and I think the first lady’s speaking out well.”

Mrs. Obama has urged parents and food manufacturers to make healthier choices available to children, adding that she tells her daughters, “Dessert is not a right.” She has not called for government mandates on the issue.

Even so, Ms. Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate, has called Mrs. Obama’s efforts an example of “government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us.” In a December episode of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” on TLC, Ms. Palin searched her kitchen for the ingredients to make s’mores, saying it was “in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.”

Conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have taken similar shots at Mrs. Obama.

But appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” Mr. Huckabee, who once shed more than 100 pounds, said that in fact Mrs. Obama was calling attention to a serious problem, not calling for government intrusion.

Asked about the criticism of Mrs. Obama, Mr. Christie said, “I think it’s unnecessary,” and he made a point of saying that he did not want the government telling people what to eat.

“But I think Mrs. Obama being out there,” he said, “encouraging people in a positive way to eat well and to exercise and to be healthy, I don’t have a problem with that.”

GOP Counts The Ways To Defund Health Law : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

Did House Republicans keep their promise to defund the health care overhaul as part of their bill to cut more than $60 billion from the federal budget for the rest of the fiscal year?

You betcha. They've come up with more than half a dozen ways to throttle spending on overhaul, in fact.

Most of the attention went to the amendment to the spending bill offered by Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT). Rehberg, who chairs the spending subcommittee that oversees the Department of Health and Human Services, offered language to the bill that would bar the use of funds to pay the salaries of any HHS "employee, officer, contractor, or grantee" to implement the health law. It passed on a 239-187 vote, almost exclusively along party lines.

But just in case that doesn't work, House Republicans passed several other amendments as well.

House GOP looks at tough health insurance realities - Marin Cogan - POLITICO.com

Ask any House Republican about repealing President Barack Obama’s health care law, and you’ll get the same fiery, self-assured talking points about tearing down what Speaker John Boehner has called a “monstrosity.”

But talk to some of the 16 freshman lawmakers who have declined their government health benefits, and you’ll hear a different side of the story — about tough out-of-pocket expenses, pre-existing conditions and support for health reforms that would help those who struggle with their coverage. As they venture into the free market for health insurance, these lawmakers — many of whom swept into office fueled by tea party anger over the health care law — are facing monthly premiums of $1,200 and fears of double-digit rate hikes.

The experience has caused some of them to think harder about the “replace” part of the “repeal and replace” mantra the GOP has adopted regarding the health care law.

“I have a niece who has pre-existing conditions, and I worry about her if she was ever to lose her job,” said Florida Rep. Richard Nugent, one of the freshman lawmakers who declined federal health insurance benefits.

Every single House Republican voted to repeal the health care law last month.

What Repealing the Affordable Care Act Will Cost Families, Seniors, Small Businesses, States… | The White House

This week, Republicans in the House of Representatives unveiled a bill that will repeal the Affordable Care Act and take us back to the days when insurance companies controlled the health care people could receive.  This doesn’t come as a surprise, as Republican leaders have been threatening repeal since President Obama signed the reforms into law on March 23, 2010.  But what is surprising is how carelessly they are disregarding the consequences of taking away the new freedoms, control over health care decisions, and the cost savings the law provides the American people, including

  • Unprecedented accountability and transparency in the insurance market;
  • Reduced prescription drug costs for seniors; tax credits for small businesses to defray the costs of employee coverage;
  • Protection against double-digit premium increases; preventive care without cost sharing; support for working class families by providing them tax credits to help pay for coverage;
  • Improved quality health insurance coverage for all Americans by creating competitive new state based health insurance marketplaces called Exchanges; and
  • Affordable, quality health coverage for all Americans regardless of their age and gender, or if they have a pre-existing condition.
