Spinal Injury Recovery Foundation - Home

The Need for Spinal Injury Recovery Foundation

A family never plans on having a member severely injure their spine. While in intensive care, families face the extreme shock of suddenly having to arrange for long-term rehabilitation and around-the-clock care for their loved one. In Las Vegas, these families currently have little or no resources available to guide them through a myriad of crucial decisions that will impact the outcome of their loved one's long-term recovery.

Founder's Story

No one knows this better than Scott Frost, founder of SIRF, father, fiancé, loving son and entrepreneur. On May 10, 2009, Scott was injured in an off-road dirt bike accident that damaged his spinal cord and left him paralyzed from the neck down. What started as a day of fun in the hills south of Henderson Executive Airport turned into a near-fatal chain of events. [Read Scott's complete story here.]

SIRF's Origin

During the 70 days Scott spent in Las Vegas' Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital, he watched other patients who didn't have the help of friends and family like he had. Many had given up hope for their futures. "It made me furious that this could happen in this day and age." I don't want anyone to have to go through the hopelessness of being so alone and distraught. I was surrounded by loved ones. I can't imagine if I hadn't had that.

Caring For Elderly Parents: Top 10 Concerns | cdaamerica

By AgingCare.com

Parents care for their children, to strengthen body and mind, and
nurture them forward to independence. Siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and even friends and neighbors often join in the family circle, helping to care for the kids. Such is what caregiving is all about, a nurturing,
supportive commitment by family and extended family members. Many of us have the opportunity to return that same level of commitment and support to Mom, Dad or both as they age.

It is time to return the favor, not just individually, but as a family, to
provide support where necessary and preserve your parents’ ability and
independence as long as possible. What are the 10 most important family concerns in caregiving for a parent? Consider:

1. Rally the Troops

Deborah Halpern, Communications Director for the non-profit National Family Caregiver’s Association, urges that caregiving your parent is not a one-person job or burden. Instead, you should have a family team that includes friends and neighbors, each with a role and responsibility in the caregiving process. There must be a ringleader, according to Halpern, who contacts each family member with the invitation or challenge to”step up to the plate and help.”

Consider the team concept as akin to hiring for different jobs in a company.
Everyone is good at something, while he or she may be inept or less than
qualified in another task or field. When several family members are involved,
even for just a few hours each week, the burden on the primary caregiver is
reduced significantly. Sharing responsibilities also brings more family members
into active contact, sharing, support, monitoring, understanding and visiting
with Mom or Dad.

Reader's Digest Partners With OrganizedWisdom to Close the "Online Health Gap"

OrganizedWisdom, an expert-driven platform for health and wellness, and Reader's Digest, the world's largest global editorial brand whose name is synonymous with "getting to the heart of the matter," today announced a partnership aimed at improving consumers' search for health information. Under the agreement, OrganizedWisdom will power a new search-driven, consumer-facing health program that will aggregate, organize and promote high-quality Web resources, medical journal articles, and other vetted health content shared online to give millions of people the right information at the right time.

"Our goal is to do everything we can to close the 'Online Health Gap' -- the scary space that exists between a doctor visit and the Internet, where people are left alone with an empty search box and millions of computer-generated results," explains Steven Krein, CEO of OrganizedWisdom. "By partnering with trusted content curators like Reader's Digest, we can help elevate the standard of care as we guide millions of people to discover valuable health information contributed by experts."

In addition to search, consumers will also be able to access the program's content at OrganizedWisdom.com and at the newly relaunched RD.com, now known as the Reader's Digest Version. The program will also consist of additional online and offline initiatives, including inserts in print editions of Reader's Digest and pamphlets distributed to up to 300,000 doctor waiting rooms. Multiplatform sponsorship opportunities enable health marketers to interact meaningfully with consumers at the most critical moment -- during their search for information.

"This is a year of tremendous growth and innovation for the Reader's Digest brand with a return to our roots as expert content curator and the launch of a range of new, digitally-driven products, ensuring that consumers can experience Reader's Digest however they choose," said Dan Lagani, President of Reader's Digest Media. "The partnership with OrganizedWisdom extends our ability to deliver trusted, time-saving insights beyond the Reader's Digest Version website and mobile platforms."

Stroke Rehabilitation, Healthology, Inc.:"Life after a stroke is often very difficult for stroke survivors and their loved ones, especially when the survivor suffers from post-stroke spasticity, a common consequence of stroke. Post-stroke spasticity is an uncontrollable muscle tightness that can cause painful muscle cramps such as arm and leg cramps. Fortunately, there are therapies that now allow stroke victims to control their spasticity and regain normal muscle control after stroke as well as recovery for muscle cramps and tightness . Post Stroke Help offers information about these treatments, patient perspectives on recovery, and advice on how patients can better communicate with their doctors. Leading medical experts created Post Stroke Help to help stroke patients and caregivers work with their doctors to regain control of their muscle—and their lives."

NINDS Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) Information Page, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke:"What is Transient Ischemic Attack? A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a transient stroke that lasts only a few minutes. It occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is briefly interrupted. TIA symptoms, which usually occur suddenly, are similar to those of stroke but do not last as long. Most symptoms of a TIA disappear within an hour, although they may persist for up to 24 hours. Symptoms can include: numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion or difficulty in talking or understanding speech; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; and difficulty with walking, dizziness, or loss of balance and coordination."

What is Stroke?NINDS Stroke Information Page:"A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the part of the brain is suddenly interrupted (ischemic) or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, spilling blood into the spaces surrounding the brain cells (hemorrhagic). The symptoms of stroke are easy to spot: sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking; dizziness; or loss of balance or coordination. Brain cells die when they no longer receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood or when they are damaged by sudden bleeding into or around the brain. These damaged cells can linger in a compromised state for several hours. With timely treatment, these cells can be saved. Stroke is diagnosed through several techniques: a short neurological examination, blood tests, CT scans, MRI scans, Doppler ultrasound, and arteriography. Stroke seems to run in some families. Family members may have a genetic tendency for stroke or share a lifestyle that contributes to stroke. The most important risk factors for stroke are hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and cigarette smoking. Other risks include heavy alcohol consumption, high blood cholesterol levels, illicit drug use, and genetic or congenital conditions. Some risk factors for stroke apply only to women. Primary among these are pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause."

Improving Oral Hygiene in Patients After Stroke:"Oral care can be a challenging task for those who have impairments as a consequence of stroke. Physical weakness, lack of coordination and the cognitive problems that can accompany a stroke may prevent a person from maintaining good oral hygiene on their own. Dry mouth, oral ulcers and stomatitis may be caused by medication, which further impact on oral health.1 Many stroke patients rely on nursing staff for assistance with oral hygiene, yet oral care is not perceived as a care priority,2 and there are few training or care policies in place.3"
