Multiple Sclerosis, Problem Oriented Nursing Care Plans, Center for Neurologic Study:"At the time these nursing care plans were prepared, the Multiple Sclerosis Center was an integral part of the Department of Neurology at St. Barnabas Hospital. As patients from the outpatient MS Center used the inpatient services, the nursing staff requested assistance in their overall management of these patients. This standard care plan was the result. Tough Demands on Nurses Adversely Affect Patients

Better working conditions and better staffing of nurses can significantly improve the care of patients with serious conditions, according to the latest nurse labor study by the University of Maryland School of Nursing.

Several troubling trends in patient outcomes surfaced as researchers analyzed survey data from 633 nurses in 71 hospitals in North Carolina and Illinois concerning patient outcomes, says lead investigator Alison Trinkoff, ScD, FAAN.

For example, pneumonia deaths were significantly more likely in hospitals where nurses reported increased psychological demands and more adverse work schedules. Trinkoff says they measured high psychological demands by very fast work, lack of time to complete work, excessive required work, being slowed by delays from other workers, and frequent interruptions. Another trend was that patients were more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis after surgery in hospitals where nurses reported high psychological demands. Staffing also was controlled in the analysis, so that the effects occurred independent of staffing.

How to Give an IM Injection, Kathy Quan RN BSN

When it is necessary to inject medication, the route is determined by the chemical make up and viscosity of the medication. Many times the route will be intramuscular (into the muscle) known as an IM injection or "shot' as opposed to subcutaneous or intradermal injection.

The injection site will be determined by the volume of medication to be injected. Other considerations are the age of the patient, the size and weight of the patient and mobility issues. The patient’s ability to relax and cooperate can also play a role in determining a safe injection site. Needle size depends on factors such as the site, medication and size/weight of the patient.

20 Iconic Nurses Every Nursing Student Should Study | Nursing Schools.net

During your time in nursing school, you're bound to hear the names of countless famous and influential nurses thrown around. But if you're looking for inspiration in your own career or just want to further your education, there are some amazing women and men in the profession you should study. Here are twenty nurses who worked hard, often against the grain of the larger medical community, to change the face of health care in the United States and around the world.

  1. Florence Nightingale: Even if you weren't in nursing school, you more than likely would have heard of this woman, perhaps the most famous nurse in history. Believing that God has called her to be a nurse, Nightingale went against expectations for aristocratic women at the time, pursuing a career rather than marrying and settling down. She is best known in stories for her nursing in the Crimean War, but should also be credited with laying the foundation for modern nursing with the establishment of the St. Thomas Hospital in London, the first secular school of its kind to train and educate nursing students.
  2. Dorthea Dix: Born in 1802, Dix was one of the loudest voices in America when it came to lobbying Congress to improve the treatment and care for the mentally ill in the United States. Inspired by reforms she saw going on in England, Dix moved to establish new facilities and legislation that helped improve the social welfare of the insane both here and abroad. When the Civil War broke out, Dix was appointed Superintendent of Union Army Nurses, providing care to the wounded on both sides of the conflict.
  3. Helen Fairchild: If you want to learn more about the realities of combat nursing during World War I, read through Helen Fairchild's collection of wartime letters to her family. You'll get vivid stories about the horrors and challenges that nurses faced when trying to care for patients who were the victims of sometimes horrific war injuries. After surviving heavy shelling and mustard gas on the battlefield in France, Fairchild would die from complications during an ulcer surgery after only five years as a nurse.

Jonas Center Quantifies Impact of Nursing Faculty Shortage | All Sites Nursing News

The shortage of nurse educators could affect the care of millions of patients, according to estimates by the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence.

Each nurse educator position left unfilled could impact healthcare for 3.6 million patients, according to the report. Schools with baccalaureate nursing programs have about 900 faculty vacancies, with thousands more likely to arise in the next 15 years.

Darlene Curley, RN, MS, executive director of the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, and Christine Kovner, RN, PhD, FAAN, professor at New York University College of Nursing, developed a formula to measure the impact of nursing faculty vacancies on patients. They considered the average number of students taught by one faculty member and the number of patients cared for by a typical RN. They note that their estimates are conservative.

Integrating New Nursing Grads, Nursetogether.com

Do you remember what it was like to be a new nursing graduate?  One day you were a student, and ‘poof,’ one day you were a nurse.  Expectations ran high and responsibilities ran even higher.  The cushion of ‘just being a student’ and having your instructor ultimately be responsible is gone in an instant.  Do you remember the anxiety, fear and unsure feelings of those first few months?

When you are well into your own career and overloaded with your own patients, it is easy to forget what it was like in the beginning.  But wait, we need your active participation to help us integrate our new staff, now more than ever!   In a profession that is one of the most trusted and respected in the world, it is embarrassing that we have a phenomenon known as ‘nurses eating their young’ - the well known, but little talked about, epidemic of senior nurses making work life even more challenging for their young counterparts.  I am hopeful that the general public is unaware of this, as it would be rather embarrassing for us!

Why do you think this exists?  Do we feel that new grads must ‘pay their dues,' that because no one supported us, we don’t need to support them?  Is it our own insecurities?  Are we worried they have newer, fresher knowledge, and that they will want our jobs?

Whatever our reasons, whether conscious or not, many of us are hurting, rather than helping, our new nurses integrate into our institutions.  With the shortage of nurses so prevalent, wouldn’t it be in OUR best interest to help these ladies and gentlemen through their first, and possibly most challenging, year in the profession?

  The beeper goes off, and I race to the ED of the local hospital about two miles away. There, a patient with acute myocardial infarction (MI) awaits, tubes sticking out of him, an ashen look on his frightened face.

Three hours earlier, while the patient was working in his yard, his chest had begun to ache. The aching soon developed into a crushing pressure. Summoning family members for help, he had them call 911 and was whisked to the emergency department. His ECG now shows more than 2 mm of elevation in the anterolateral leads. The order is given for a thrombolytic.
