Should You Incorporate Your Registry Business? By Joseph Caracci, RN:"The short answer is yes! When starting a new nurse registry business, you are entering into a legal business environment that requires you to take steps to protect your personal assets, such as your home, your savings, and your retirement. With this in mind, you need to determine which legal form you are going to take for your new registry. Some of the common choices are a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a limited liability partnership (LLP), a limited liability company (LLC), and a corporation."

Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome

100 Ways To A Stress Free Christmas - by Dumb Little Man

Christmas is traditionally a time of year when we enjoy ourselves, we let our hair down and are a little more relaxed. At least that's the way it's meant to be. For a lot of people however, it's a stressful time of year. There's the shopping to do, there's the list of cards for all the family; god forbid we don't send Aunt Betty a card, there's the dinner to buy, there's work to do, there's family to contact, there's a hundred and one things to do.

Well here is a list of things you can do to relax and enjoy yourself a little more:

  1. Set A budget
It's easy to get carried away buying Christmas presents. Set a budget and stick to it.

  2. Make A List
Make a list of every single person you need to buy a present for. Keep it safe and tick off as you buy.

  3. Write A little A Day
From now until maybe the 14th December, write your cards out, maybe 5 per day. No need to stress about getting all of them done at the same time.

  4. Address labels
Get someone to put all your names and addresses from your address book into a spreadsheet and then print off your labels. You can pay your son, daughter, niece or nephew to do this for you.

  5. Don't Send Out of Guilt
If you are sending cards or presents out of guilt, don't. Don't just send because you feel obliged to, cut out this practice and send who you want to send to.

  6. Wrap Presents The Same Night
As you buy your presents make it a practice to wrap them the same night. This way you will not feel overwhelmed at having to wrap them all at the same time.

  7. Enroll The Kids Into Wrapping
Kids love Christmas so why not get them involved more into helping you do the tedious time consuming part of Christmas like wrapping the presents.

  8. Fill Up Your Freezer Now
There's always specials on this time of year but beware as the prices will probably go up again just before Christmas.

  9. Get Into The Christmas Spirit
It can be quite stressful but remembering that Christmas is a fun time for everyone, or should be, so get into the spirit and plays Christmas CDs, go to Panto's, or see the Christmas nativity.

  10. Make Homemade Gifts
Making homemade gifts can be a great way to personalize your presents and save you a bit of money. If you're at all arty or can cook why not make presents this year.

Guides help recovering patients find long-term care | The Salt Lake Tribune

An uncomfortable truth for anyone facing disability for a year or more: If you go into a nursing home, you might never get out.

Under patchwork Medicare provisions, says Utah Commission on Aging Director Maureen Henry, it is more convenient for hospitals to discharge patients to nursing homes than to figure out how they might live in their homes and communities.

But what looks like the easy solution can be costly. Nursing home bills may drive more people onto Medicaid, which costs taxpayers more, and the move can unnecessarily disrupt the community and impoverish the lives of patients, Henry says.

“You’re shifting residence; you’re shifting family structure out of the community and into the nursing facility,” she says.

Now, with the help of a $700,000 grant from the federal Administration on Aging, the Utah commission is linking hospital discharge staff with “options planners,” who help guide patients and their families through a complicated array of choices for extended care.

The way Medicare and Medicaid law works, people are guaranteed care in nursing homes. But there is no similar guarantee of coverage for care outside an institution, meaning family finances may limit the choices.

“People have the right to decide where and when they receive long-term care,” Henry says. “Our objective is to try to catch people before they are scrambling in a crisis, stop giving people the runaround.”

Is Santa sick? A doctor gives St. Nick a checkup - Health - Healthy Holidays - msnbc.com

He is overweight, constantly flushed, trying to accomplish a superhuman feat – and may be using cookies to deal with the stress.

Should we be worried about Santa's health? [ Santa Claus: The Real Man Behind the Myth ]

In advance of his epic journey on Christmas Eve, we asked a doctor to give him a checkup.

Red nose and cheeks
While some may attribute a ruddy appearance to fever or worse (too much mulled wine?), Dr. Rachel Vreeman of the Indiana University School of Medicine thinks Santa's rosy complexion is likely benign.

Patient rights overlooked in nursing home evictions | courier-journal.com | The Courier-Journal

An investigation by The Indianapolis Star found numerous examples of what the state's ombudsman for long-term care calls “a major problem”: nursing homes evicting patients without regard for their rights.

In one case, an Auburn facility dumped a resident at an emergency room and refused to take him back, leaving him stranded at the hospital for three weeks until he could find another home. In another case, a Bedford home tried to evict a brain-damaged teenager who had no safe place to go.

The newspaper also found that the state almost never punishes nursing homes, even after it has been made aware that a facility is violating state and federal laws.

“I think if we had a better enforcement system or a more punitive enforcement system, people would quit” wrongly evicting residents, said long-term care ombudsman Arlene Franklin of the state's Family and Social Services Administration. “If there were a harsher penalty for that, they wouldn't do so many inappropriate discharges.”

Nurse testified to horrors of Holocaust | montgomeryadvertiser.com | Montgomery Advertiser

She was a young Army nurse who never dreamed that one day she'd walk through the gates of hell.

AdTech Ad

They opened for her in early May of 1945. The place was Dachau, one of Nazi Germany's most notorious death camps.

Lt. Nettie Hardy Eskridge was surrounded by thousands of dead and dying men, many stacked on top of each other like cord wood.

The horrifying scenes unfolding in front of her never dimmed and would remain with her throughout the 65 years she had left to live.

When Nettie died this month at the age of 89, the minister who presided at her funeral lauded her military service as well as her anger over those who claimed the Holocaust never happened.

Nurses: Believe What They Tell You in Nursing School, A Nurse Does Make a Difference | BonnieRN Blog

My world, in geriatric care management, primarily consists of interacting with many health care technicians, non-degree workers, and varied professionals. So, saying this another way, most of my contacts are not nurses. I can tell you, more than weekly, I must explain to those in the field of social and care-giving support, how beneficial it is to have a nurse on the team or committee for decision making. I still get surprised that family is often unaware that a trained and registered nurse is not a part of the team when very serious medical choices are being reviewed for their loved one.  A nurse on the health care team is a natural advocate for the patient.

It is true, and is what I was taught, that the nurse is the last line of deffense (often) for a patient in a facility (or elsewhere). Nurses, know when to contact physicians when there is a concern, check physician orders after they are written, call for questions, order the medication (if needed) from the pharmacy, and verify that it has been delivered and administer the medication (or intervention) to the patient. In home support, nurses assess, support the patient in physician monitoring, and implement change (usually via contacting the physician) when it is needed.

So, the next time a health care team approaches you or asks for a meeting, be sure to include the RN on the team. That RN is a built in advocate for the patient, the family, and will monitor the success of the intervention.

Your questions and comments are appreciated and encouraged.
