Late one December night on the cancer ward the halls were quiet and solemn, the patients were asleep and most of the visitors were gone. The nurses were gathered about the nurse's station preparing for shift change. Sarah, one of the nurses, was especially tired, having worked seven straight 12 hour days. The kids had needs, her husband had been laid off, and the house payment was due. What kept her going was that in January she was going to find a new job. After ten years of answering call lights, working short staffed, putting up with constant administrative changes, she had decided that it was not worth the effort anymore.

PING. PING. PING. Sara angrily looked at the call light box, "Good grief!" The patient was a seventy-year-old woman. Sarah had been to her room at the end of the hall at least fifteen times. Angrily she started down the hall.

On her way, she suddenly stopped. She stood motionless as a soft voice wafted out of room 235.

"And then one day I'll cross the river; I'll fight life's final war with pain; And then as death gives way to victory, I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives."

Tears welled up in her eyes as she listened and thought about the young woman in that room -- a thirty-five year old mother of two with cancer, with only a week to live, perhaps days. Sarah stood there, with tears in her eyes, remembering how this young terminal woman had such peace. The patient would speak to everyone who came into her room and she would smile even in her pain and took the time to share her faith and let people know the reason for her peace was a faith in God. All the nurses who had been around her commented on her strength and how they had felt peace and calm after talking with this exceptional young woman..

"Because He lives, I can face tomorrow; Because He lives, all fear is gone Because I know who holds the future, Life is worth all the living, just because He lives."

Unstoppable tears flowed as Sarah stood a few moments more, but the tears had taken on a newness. No longer were they tears of sadness for this young woman but tears of renewal that washed away the disappointment and disillusionment of her job, and the fear about the future.

Sarah started down the hall to answer the call light, but she was no longer going to check on some pestering old woman. She was going to the room of a patient, a person, a fellow human in need. Sarah no longer looked to January so she could quit -- she looked to her next shift when she would again have the opportunity to serve her fellow man. Sarah left work with a new outlook on life. She had a rekindling of the spirit of service that had motivated her to become a nurse. Those fires had almost died, but for a young terminal woman who had the desire to be of service to her fellow man even unto death.

This is a reminder to me that the reason that we are on this earth at all is to be of service to each other. Christ said it best when He said, "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his brother."

Young Adults Blast 'Stupid Cancer' With Social Networking : Hospitalist News

or adolescents and young adults with cancer, news from the annual conference of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society was not good. In line with mounting evidence from around the world, studies pointed to disproportionately heavy burdens shouldered by teens and young adults with cancer, in terms of rising incidence, stagnant mortality rates, financial hardship, pain, and psychological distress.

The findings were neither unfamiliar nor surprising to Erin Eloise, a young survivor staffing the i[2]y I’m Too Young for This! Cancer Foundation booth, home to stupidcancer.com, in the exhibit hall.

"We deal with an onslaught of anxiety and depression because we are not just concerned about our health, we are concerned about our whole lives," said the 24-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y., resident, diagnosed as a college student with phyllodes, a rare form of breast cancer.

You gave on the way a pleasant smile
And thought no more about it.
It cheered a life that had been dark the while
Which might have been wrecked without it.
And so for that smile that was given there,
You'll have a reward sometime-somewhere.

You spoke one day a cheering word,
And passed to other duties.
It cheered a heart; new promise stirred
And painted a life with beauties.
And so for that word of golden cheer,
You'll have a reward sometime-somewhere.

You lent a hand to a fallen one;
lift in love was given.
You saved a soul when hope was gone
And helped him on toward heaven.
and, so for that help you proffered there,
You'll have a reward sometime-somewhere.

When to sue your doctor or hospital Should you? | Eye Opener: The Nash & Associates Blog | %post_tags%

Recently, a CNN article titled “Harmed in the Hospital? Should You Sue?” described the story of a two-year-old baby with a septic infection who waited about five hours in the emergency department before being seen by a physician. The child ultimately needed several amputations as a result of the delay in medical treatment.

Using this tragic story as a point of reference, the article suggests a number of criteria to help patients decide when to sue and when not to sue a health care provider. For example, the article correctly suggests that a patient who has not sustained injury should not sue a health care provider even if the health care provider’s conduct might have been negligent. In medical malpractice cases, a plaintiff seeks monetary compensation for injuries. If there are no identifiable injuries, there simply isn’t a case for medical malpractice.

As more and more Americans are turning to the Internet for their health information, how do you know if the information you are reading is accurate?

Here are 5 helpful tips to consider when looking  for health information online:

1. Look for sites that are well known, associated with a medical center or government agency such as Mayo Clinic or National Institute for Health. Microsoft Examines Causes of ‘Cyberchondria’ - NYTimes.com

Published: November 24, 2008

If that headache plaguing you this morning led you first to a Web search and then to the conclusion that you must have a brain tumor, you may instead be suffering from cyberchondria.

On Monday, Microsoft researchers published the results of a study of health-related Web searches on popular search engines as well as a survey of the company’s employees.

The study suggests that self-diagnosis by search engine frequently leads Web searchers to conclude the worst about what ails them.

The researchers said they had undertaken the study as part of an effort to add features to Microsoft’s search service that could make it more of an adviser and less of a blind information retrieval tool.

Googling Symptoms: How It Can Help Patients and Doctors - TIME

But to debate whether patients should or should not Google their symptoms (which a surprising number of doctors seem to enjoy engaging in) is an absurd exercise. Patients already are doing it, it is now a fact of normal patient behavior, and it will only increase as Internet technology becomes ever more ubiquitous. The average Joe has more health information at his fingertips — both credible and charlatan — than all the medical libraries ever built put together. So the real question is, What can professionals do to translate this phenomenon into better health for their patients and the public?

First, they can adopt strategies in health-care delivery and education that endorse the process of patient self-education. Shared clinical decisionmaking is an influential model for patient care now being promoted by researchers, educators and the federal government as a way to get patients to partner with their doctors to take an active role in making decisions about health care. The ideas behind this model were outlined in the late 1990s by researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, and were important enough to be included in the language of both the federal stimulus and health-reform laws. This model recognizes that many choices in medical care often involve complicated trade-offs. In this process, patients are encouraged to become informed of the nuances related to a health-care decision in advance of the doctor-patient encounter; and the Internet has naturally become the place where these tools can be found in the form of worksheets, videos and decision aids. (See "The Health IT Paradox: Why More Data Doesn't Always Mean Better Care.")
