Extra Pounds at Midlife May Boost Dementia Risk Later: MedlinePlus

Being overweight during middle age may increase your risk of developing dementia later on, a new Swedish study suggests.

Several studies have already linked obesity in middle age to dementia in later life, but it was unclear whether merely carrying some extra pounds in midlife was a risk factor. The new research suggests that even being overweight -- defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 30 -- is linked with a higher risk of dementia.

"Being overweight at midlife increased the risk of dementia in late life by more than 70 percent," said lead study author Dr. Weili Xu, a postdoctoral researcher at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

Being obese raised the risk even more, to nearly fourfold.

"Although the effect of midlife overweight on dementia is not as substantial as that of obesity, its impact on public health is significant," Xu said, noting that 1.6 billion adults worldwide are obese or overweight, including 50 percent of adults in the United States and Europe.

The study is published in the May 3 issue of Neurology.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese: 6 Ways to Handle Criticism at Work

"If something is bothering the boss, you've got to find out what it is," she says. "That's why it's so important that you ask questions, trying to narrow down exactly what is the problem. Don't let the boss talk about past issues because there's nothing you can do about that. Keep him focused on what must be done in the future."

Rosenberg, author of From Rage to Resolution, (iUniverse, $23.95), offers more tips when dealing with criticism at work:

• Control your body language. Don't clench your teeth or fists or cross your arms while listening. Try to sit next to the boss if he's offering feedback such as in a performance review. This sets a more friendly, equitable tone.

• Don't become defensive. Justifying yourself is a waste of time, as is trying to blame someone else.

• Focus on the problem. When the speaker is done, ask questions and then rephrase the issue: "As I understand it, you are concerned about (this problem) and you would like me to (state solution). Is that correct?"

Calorie Intake Rises When Fast-Food Restaurants Nearby: Study - MSN Health & Fitness - Nutrition

Increased access to fast food restaurants is associated with higher calorie intake among black Americans in the southeastern United States, a new study found.

Researchers analyzed data from 4,740 participants in the African American Jackson Heart Study. Researchers didn't find any consistent associations between the availability of fast food restaurants and body-mass index (BMI) or waist circumference.

However, the study authors did find that living within 5 miles of fast food restaurants was associated with higher calorie intake among women and men younger than age 55, even after adjustments were made for individual socioeconomic status. Specifically, men consumed 138 more calories and women consumed 58 more calories.

Presentation Cites Ways to Counteract Low Health Literacy | National Nursing News

Although low health literacy is a significant barrier to quality care, especially among elderly patients, a recent presentation noted how increased use of simple health literacy assessment tests by nurses and clinicians can help improve communication and health outcomes.

Several screening tools are available to assess health literacy but are underutilized, according to a presentation at the 36th Annual Congress of the Oncology Nursing Society by Ellen C. Mullen, RN, ANP-BC, GNP-BC, nurse practitioner in the Lymphoma and Myeloma Center at The University of MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Furthermore, nurses and other health professionals routinely underestimate the prevalence of limited health literacy — the degree to which an individual can obtain, process and understand health information needed to make appropriate health decisions — and overestimate patients’ ability to understand medical information.

Asthma Pill As Effective As Inhalers And Easier To Use

Leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) pills are just as effective as inhalers in managing asthma symptoms, and are much easier to use, researchers from the University of East Anglia, England reported in NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine).

LTRAs are infrequently prescribed as an alternative to inhalers because some people believed them to be less effective. This latest study shows they are effective.

Examples of LTRAs include Singulair (montelukast) and Accolate (zafirlukast). In the United Kingdom guidelines recommend LTRAs as a third step in asthma management.

Prof David Price and team monitored 650 asthma patients for 24 months. There was clear evidence that LTRAs are not only just as effective as inhalers, they are also much more user-friendly.

Notes of a Student Nurse: A Dose of Reality « Off the Charts

It’s been said before that we are our own worst enemies, our own worst critics. I can’t imagine a time when these phrases are truer than during nursing school. Little more than a year ago, when I was starting my prerequisites for admission to the BSN nursing program, I was giddy with excitement. Images of what life would be like played in my head like episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, or, on a day I was feeling a bit more goofy, reruns of Scrubs.

I took any opportunity I had to share with friends, family—even new apartment neighbors—that I was well on my way to nursing school with the confident smile of a person destined to save the world, one patient at a time. I scoured discussion boards and nursing student forums late into the night, anticipating the day that I, too, would have something profound to contribute.

I laughed off those who warned me that the path was difficult and ridden with challenges. There was no bridge I couldn’t cross, no task I couldn’t do, and no test I couldn’t pass with flying colors. The world was mine. Now, I’m living those moments as a first semester nursing student—but a funny thing happened on the way to the present, a thing I will lovingly refer to as reality.
