Registered nurse job seekers will need more advanced degrees, study says

As the nursing job market tightens, candidates for registered nurse positions are increasingly in need of more education to separate themselves from the pack to get hired.

And the jobs that registered nurses end up landing are increasingly likely to come outside of hospitals.

Those are two key findings from the latest biannual study of nursing supply and demand released by the Greater Cincinnati Health Council, a group of hospitals and health systems from the region. The study is based on data gathered from 13 Cincinnati-area hospitals and 10 nursing schools.

In 2010, the vacancy rate for nursing jobs at the hospitals fell to 2.5 percent from 7.3 percent two years earlier, according to a statement from the Health Council. That competitive job market gave employers the luxury of hiring a more educated nursing workforce. The number of nurses with bachelor’s degrees climbed to 41 percent from 33 percent during that time frame, while 12 percent had master’s degrees in 2010, compared with just 3 percent two years earlier.

“Hospitals in our region are beginning to demand more specific degree requirements in order to adapt to changing healthcare trends and meet changing patient-care needs,” said Mary Duffey, executive director of the Council’s Health Care Workforce Center.

In 2008, nearly all new nursing school graduates who stayed in the Cincinnati area and found jobs in healthcare organizations (99 percent) did so at a hospital. But two years later, that number dropped to 80 percent. The Council expects that trend to continue as more emphasis in the U.S. health system is placed on preventive care obtained in the community, and an aging population increasingly moves into long-term care and assisted-living facilities.

The continuation of that trend would put Cincinnati more in line with the rest of the country, in which about 60 percent of nurses work in hospitals, according to the report.

I received report on two patients; both sounded clinically stable. One patient, Dominic,* was particularly memorable. Dominic was an 87-year-old man who had been transported from a nursing home to the emergency department (ED) at about 4 AM for symptoms including a 104F fever and chest congestion. He was evaluated, diagnosed with pneumonia, and admitted. During report, the departing night nurse indicated that Dominic was oriented to person only and had been agitated since arrival."

Carolyn Zaumeyer, MSN, ARNP, Nurse Practitioner as Entrepreneur, By:"Carolyn Zaumeyer, MSN, ARNP is a graduate of Florida International University and President and owner of Women's Health Watch, Inc. Over seven years ago Carolyn ventured into independent nursing practice. When planning her new practice, she did a literature review and was unable to locate any resource material to guide the nurse practitioner in developing her practice. While she was putting together her new venture, she was also keeping detailed notes, hoping that eventually she would be able to help other nurse practitioners interested in independent practice. In 1995 she published the book, "The Nurse Practitioner as Entrepreneur: How to Establish and Operate an Independent Practice - a reference and resource manual." This book has enjoyed national sales over the years, and many universities and colleges have utilized it as a text. It is now available for sale at our Website, "The Nurse Practitioner as Entrepreneur". It continues to guide and instruct nurse practitioners on how to establish, organize, and operate an independent nursing practice. Email Carolyn."

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."

Jonas Center Quantifies Impact of Nursing Faculty Shortage | All Sites Nursing News

The shortage of nurse educators could affect the care of millions of patients, according to estimates by the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence.

Each nurse educator position left unfilled could impact healthcare for 3.6 million patients, according to the report. Schools with baccalaureate nursing programs have about 900 faculty vacancies, with thousands more likely to arise in the next 15 years.

Darlene Curley, RN, MS, executive director of the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, and Christine Kovner, RN, PhD, FAAN, professor at New York University College of Nursing, developed a formula to measure the impact of nursing faculty vacancies on patients. They considered the average number of students taught by one faculty member and the number of patients cared for by a typical RN. They note that their estimates are conservative.

Health reform will bring need for more nurses in Oklahoma | NewsOK.com

More Oklahomans could soon hear: “The nurse will see you now.”

The prescription for hospitals and doctors' offices, which will get even busier as health care reform brings millions more people to their doorsteps, may be highly trained nurses with greater authority.

Those nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and be full partners with doctors as health care reform collides with an aging population and a reduction in primary care doctors, according to the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

“This is such a historic, monumental prescription for change,” said Marvel Williams, the dean of the nursing school at Oklahoma City University.

“I know there will be some people out there among other health care professions, particularly, who are a bit nervous about the role nurses are expected to take, based on these recommendations.”

Nursing credentials and certifications - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from List of nursing credentials)
Jump to: navigation, search

[edit] Postnominal nursing credential usage

A nurse's postnominal (listed after the name) credentials usually follow his or her name in this order:

  • Highest earned academic degree in or related to nursing (e.g. "MSN")
  • Nursing licensure (e.g. "RN")
  • Nursing certification (e.g. "CCRN")

Generally credentials are listed from most to least permanent. A degree, once earned, cannot, in normal circumstances, be taken away. State licensure is only revoked for serious professional misconduct. Certifications generally must be periodically renewed by examination or the completion of a prescribed number of continuing education units (CEUs).

Nurses may also hold non-nursing credentials including academic degrees. These are usually omitted unless they are related to the nurse's job. For instance, a staff nurse would likely not list an MBA, but a nurse manager might choose to do so.

Nursing credentials are separated from the person's name (and from each other) with commas. There are usually no periods within the credentials. (e.g. "BSN" not "B.S.N.")

[edit] Nursing certifications

In the United States and Canada, many nurses who choose a specialty become certified in that area, signifying that they possess expert knowledge. There are over 200 nursing specialties and subspecialties. Studies from the Institute of Medicine have demonstrated that specialty-certified nurses have higher rates of patient satisfaction, as well as lower rates of work-related errors in patient care.

Registered nurses (RNs) are not required to be certified in a certain specialty by law. For example, it is not necessary to be a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) (a medical surgical nursing certification) to work on a Medical-Surgical (MedSurg) floor, and most MedSurg nurses are not CMSRNs. Certifications do, however, instill professionalism and make the nurse more attractive to prospective and current employers. Certified nurses also sometimes earn a salary differential over their non-certified colleagues.

Some hospitals and other health care facilities are willing to pay a certified nurse extra when he works within his specialty. Also, some hospitals may require certain nurses, such as nursing supervisors or lead nurses, be certified. Certification instills confidence in the nurses. Magnet hospitals advocate certifications.
