Facebook advertising: Facebook prepares to cash in on users' data - chicagotribune.com

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

April 17, 2011

la-fi-facebook-ads-20110417

Julee Morrison has been obsessed with Bon Jovi since she was a teenager.

So when paid ads for fan sites started popping up on the 41-year-old Salt Lake City blogger's Facebook page, she was thrilled. She described herself as a "clicking fool," perusing videos and photos of the New Jersey rockers.

Then it dawned on Morrison why all those Bon Jovi ads appeared every time she logged on to the social networking site.

"Facebook is reading my profile, my interests, the people and pages I am 'friends' with, and targeting me," Morrison said. "It's brilliant social media but it's absolutely creepy."

Hospitals Missing Opportunities on Facebook: Results of First Ever Study on How Hospitals Use Facebook - MarketWatch

A new nationwide study by Verasoni AhHa! and Simon Associates Management Consultants of how hospitals across the United States use Facebook suggests that hospitals are not using Facebook to its capacity to engage patients, build healthcare communities or develop their hospital brands.

Only a few hospitals across the United States are utilizing social media to connect with patients, improve the health status of the community and extend their brand, and these hospitals are doing it very well. The majority is not, the study indicates. "It appears that hospitals either have yet to grasp the role of Facebook with respect to connecting with patients, or have not yet invested in the medium to be able to use it as a viable marketing communications and healthcare or community development tool," said Dr. Andrea Simon, President of Simon Associates Management Consultants and co-author of this study.

The study looks at various types of relevant Facebook activities and tactics for 120 hospitals of various sizes and affiliations across the United States. The study includes an analysis of the size of network, frequency and types of posts, and the use of the integration tools available on Facebook, among other measures. "While the numbers clearly indicate that patients are on Facebook, it is the job of hospitals to find them, and engage them in a meaningful way. And, just because a hospital is on Facebook doesn't mean that they are building a meaningful Facebook experience for both the hospital and the patient," said Abe Kasbo, CEO of Verasoni Worldwide, co-author of the study.

amednews: Social media the latest tool for health care fraud investigators :: Feb. 28, 2011 ... American Medical News

As social media sites have grown more popular, so has their use by insurance companies that want to know more about the people they insure.

Disability, medical liability and workers' compensation insurers now regularly use Facebook and Twitter to investigate potential fraud, experts say.

And health insurers are using online profiling during the underwriting process. That includes looking at Facebook and Twitter posts or geolocation services such as Foursquare to see where current or prospective members go and what they do, said Owen Tripp, co-founder and chief operating officer of Reputation.com, a Redwood City, Calif.-based firm that helps people and companies monitor and manage their online profiles.

"Insurance companies and representatives of insurance companies are using social media to get an edge on their competition in understanding the risk profile of the insured," he said.

Hospital confronts social media uprising over care of dying baby - The Globe and Mail

One of Canada’s most prestigious medical institutions has made the bold decision to go public with details of a highly emotional tug-of-war over a dying infant in an attempt to defend itself against a slew of threats, condemnations and criticisms playing out in social media.

The case highlights how the emerging influence of viral videos, online campaigns and social networks can quickly damage an organization and force even the most staid institutions to change their communications strategies.

Social Networking - Finding Good Healthcare Information on Social Networking sites

Social networking can help you learn plenty about all aspects of your health care, from prevention, through symptoms and diagnosis, treatment options and disease management.

Social networking is exactly what it sounds like: conversations with others on a casual or social basis. Offline (not on the web) it would be like having lunch with a group of friends, chatting in the coffee shop or even going to a party. Online, through the web, it's a way of carrying on conversations with people you know and people you don't know, but with whom you have mutual interests.

Whereas blogs, wikis and websites are one-way communications (they all talk TO you), social networking sites are for sharing in all directions.

If you've ever chatted through an instant message or participated in a forum or support board (like the one here at patient empowerment or at any of the About.com health websites), then you have already participated in social networking, perhaps without realizing it.

Now there are dozens of social networking websites, built simply to help people carry on conversations with each other. You've probably heard some of their names, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Plaxo, LinkedIn and many others.

Social Media - How to Use Social Media to Choose a Doctor

We patients have only a few tools at our disposal to choose the right doctor for us. Most of those tools provide very cut and dried basics like licensing, board certification, even malpractice.

It has always been difficult to gain a glimpse into a doctor's attitudes or personality without meeting that doctor and getting to know him or her. Friends might tell us a doctor is "nice" - but smart patients know that doesn't mean a doctor is competent.

Along comes social media - Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and other programs online that allow us to connect with other people - including doctors. Social media allows us to learn more about a doctor's personality and attitudes, his or her approach to their work and more.

With a little detective work, picking up clues here and there, smart patients use social medial to help them research and choose their doctors.

Some might tell you that you can get this kind of information from doctors' ratings sites. But I'm not a fan. They are too restricted, and are too often populated only by disgruntled patients. So give social media a try, hopefully to find more balance.

Diabetes Social Networking Web Sites Vary in Quality: MedlinePlus

The quality of social networking sites for people with diabetes varies greatly, researchers say, with some providing useful medical information and emotional support, while others may simply be thinly veiled advertising sites.

Only half of the sites researchers from Children's Hospital Boston reviewed contained content that was in line with current diabetes science and clinical practice, the study found.

"This study was an attempt to rigorously review online social networking communities focused on diabetes, not Web sites and not bulletin board communities," said lead author Elissa Weitzman, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and the Children's Hospital Informatics Program in Boston.

"People are in these communities to address an overwhelming need for information and social communication. And, we found that a couple of sites consistently did better than others," she added.

Weitzman declined to name those sites, explaining the study was designed to evaluate the social networks overall, not to provide specific reviews. Also, some of the networks reviewed may not be active anymore.

The researchers reviewed the top 10 diabetes social networks, according to a Google search. They evaluated each one for the accuracy of its diabetes science; safety practices (Were sites monitored by moderators? Were conflicts of interest apparent? How was misinformation handled?); accessibility of privacy policies, and the ability to change privacy settings. They also looked at how advertising was identified, how member data was shared and what control members had over their data.

Nursing students suspended for posting placenta picture on Facebook – - Macleans OnCampus

A group of nursing students at Johnson County Community College were kicked out of school for posing with a human placenta and posting the photos on Facebook. (It seems the esteemed “in-mirror club shot” for Facebook has effectively been replaced.) According to court documents, the students were visiting a medical centre with their class in November when they asked their teacher if they could take photos with a placenta. The teacher “implied consent” and the girls snapped away, posting the pictures on a least one Facebook page. A few hours later, an instructor requested that the photos be taken down, and the students were informed that they were being “dismissed.” They responded by filing suit against the school.

This story has gone viral south of the border, inciting heated debate about the freedom to post the miscellaneous online and the appropriateness of school sanctions for non-academic conduct. The issue is not foreign to us here in Canada, as the University of Calgary is currently battling a case concerning its punishment of two students for content they posted on Facebook. The rhetoric is usually the same; either “give me freedom and stay off my page” or “privacy is dead, so act responsibly.”

Judge orders reinstatement for student who posted placenta photo to Facebook - KansasCity.com

A federal judge today ordered Johnson County Community College to reinstate a nursing student who had been dismissed for posting a picture of a human placenta on Facebook.

U.S. District Judge Eric F. Melgren ruled against the college on every legal point it raised.

Doyle Byrnes, 22, will be allowed to take the final exam she missed in the fall and to enroll in the new semester that begins Jan. 19.

Byrnes was one of four students who were dismissed from the nursing program after they had themselves photographed with the placenta on Nov. 10. The college said they could reapply to the program in August.

Internet in Medicine: 2000 vs 2010 « ScienceRoll

Whenever I talk about using social media in medicine to doctors, they seem to think there are more cons than pros regarding this issue. Well, I like reminding them about some major differences between 2000 and nowadays.

What would I do if in 2000 Now
I need clinical answer Try to find a collegue who knows it Post a question on Twitter
I want to hear patient story about a specific condition Try to find a patient in my town Read blogs, watch Youtube
I want to be up-to-date Go to the library once a week Use RSS and follow hundreds of journals
I want to work on a manuscript with my team We gather around the table Use Google Docs without geographical limits

Here is what Web, MD looked like in 2000 and what it looks like now:

Think you can ignore social media in your practice and workplace? Maybe. However you could embrace, utilize it and enhance your performance too.

Nursing and Social Networking - Think Twice About What You Write

With the ever-growing popularity of social-networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, the lines become less clear between what is public and what could potentially be a violation of patient privacy.

With social networking becoming an integral part of our daily lives, the boundaries between social conduct and professional misconduct are becoming increasingly difficult to navigate.

This social connection between patient and healthcare provider can open a myriad of breaches of patient privacy.

Pictures of patients posting comments regarding care provided, or even a simple “don’t forget to take your medicine” to a patient on a social media network, could be a violation of patient privacy and conflict with HIPAA rules and regulations.

HIPAA, (the law that protects us all against unauthorized disclosure of protected health information) can result in fines up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment. The discovery of a “nurse-patient” relationship via Facebook or other social-network could be considered a violation of protected patient or health information.

In June of this year, Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside CA fired five nurses for allegedly discussing patient cases on Facebook

Hospitals should not ban access to social media

by Howard Luks, MD

“Instead of focusing on treating him, an employee said, St. Mary nurses and other hospital staff did the unthinkable: They snapped photos of the dying man and posted them on Facebook.”

What can you say about an article like this? I bet there is not a single physician or nurse who are not reasonably conversant about the basic tenets of the health care privacy laws under which they practice.

Stupid is as stupid does. Perhaps more appropriately, stupidity is demonstrated by the actions of the one — or in the case, the many.

It still amazes me that people do not realize what the implication of hitting the “Enter” or “Post” or “Like” button is in our connected global society. In the health care space it is obvious that there are still a handful of doctors, nurses, orderlies, and ancillary providers who still don’t get it.

But what should an institution’s policy be? Ban access on the network? Perhaps naive, but my answer to that is a resounding no. Most people still have smart phones with WiFi or 3G access and can just as easily post to Facebook or Twitter and I doubt that the hospital’s liability is diminished.

Hospitals need to embrace social media, develop a comprehensive social media engagement policy, educate their staff, set acceptable parameters, track or monitor usage, remain vigilant and continue with the education process in perpetuity as social media is fluid and evolving and changing everyday.

Education, clarity, transparency and engagement is the key.  Not banning access.

Oakwood Hospital Employee Fired for Facebook Posting

Oakwood Hospital Employee Fired for Facebook Posting:"Cheryl James enjoyed her job at Oakwood Hospital. She never imagined posting something on Facebook from her own computer on her own time would get her fired. "He died for us, protecting us," said James. Like so many others, James was emotional following the shooting death of Taylor Police Corporal Matthew Edwards. She worked for the hospital organization that treated the police officer and the shooting suspect, Tyress Mathews"
