On the Job by Anita Bruzzese: 6 Ways to Handle Criticism at Work

"If something is bothering the boss, you've got to find out what it is," she says. "That's why it's so important that you ask questions, trying to narrow down exactly what is the problem. Don't let the boss talk about past issues because there's nothing you can do about that. Keep him focused on what must be done in the future."

Rosenberg, author of From Rage to Resolution, (iUniverse, $23.95), offers more tips when dealing with criticism at work:

• Control your body language. Don't clench your teeth or fists or cross your arms while listening. Try to sit next to the boss if he's offering feedback such as in a performance review. This sets a more friendly, equitable tone.

• Don't become defensive. Justifying yourself is a waste of time, as is trying to blame someone else.

• Focus on the problem. When the speaker is done, ask questions and then rephrase the issue: "As I understand it, you are concerned about (this problem) and you would like me to (state solution). Is that correct?"

Tips and Advice for Traveling with a Pet

If you travel for a living, you know that a lot of planning and preparing goes into making sure you have a successful assignment. When you throw a pet (or two) into the mix, there's a lot more to think about...but a lot more fun as well! Here are nine quick tips for hitting the road with your pet:

1. Pack their health docs. Chances are you've just filled out and turned in documents for yourself...but don't forget your pet! It's a good idea to pack your pet's medical records, vaccination records, and any other pertinent info just in case you need to see a vet while you're away from home. Also, it's a good idea to have a current picture of your pet with you in case they happen to slip away from you.

2. Take breaks. When you're traveling, if you need a break, chances are your pet does too. Make sure to keep their food intake to a minimum, and give them plenty of chances to stretch their legs and use the restroom.

3. Safety first. It's really cute for your cat or small dog to be sunning themselves on the dashboard, but it's not safe at all. Make sure all pets are properly restrained when traveling so they don't get injured during turns or sudden stops. Also, you don’t want them to be able to dart out of the car when you open the door when you stop.

Employee loyalty gone down the toilet: What’s the scoop? « theworkingcaregiver

Yesterday I came across an article from ABC News titled “Economic Recovery:Employee Loyalty at Low; Many May Look For New Jobs.” I was intrigued by the statistics in this article taken from a recent survey by MetLife that said one-third (36%) of employees survey said they would jump ship if given the chance or if something came better came along. Here is the article http://abcn.ws/ibCxaD.

What did I do with this new-found statistical information? I posted it on my Facebook wall. To my surprise I immediately started gaining a deluge of comments from both former corporate employees and employers as well. Here are a few of the comments:

  • Employee loyalty has decreased as a direct response and corollary to the decrease in employer loyalty. Employers no longer honor, respect or encourage their employees
