Many local nursing grads find local jobs, Utah

A couple of years ago, finding a job as a nurse was a snap.

It's a bit harder now, but thanks to a healthy relationship between the hospitals in Utah County and the local nursing schools, local grads are still doing OK.

Utah had the lowest registered nurse vacancy rate in the country as of May, said David Clark, Intermountain's CEO for the urban south region. Much of that he attributed to the natural feeding system set up because of BYU, UVU, Provo College, Eagle Gate College, Ameritech and other programs that train qualified nurses.

Intermountain Healthcare is the largest health care provider in the state and thus the largest employer of nurses as well.

And he has no problem admitting that Intermountain is a little partial to the nurses who trained "right there in our backyard."

It's not that the process becomes easy, he said.

"They have to earn it based on their own merits," Clark said.

6 Tips to Survive Your First Year as a Hospital RN - Nursing Link

The first year on the job is often the toughest for new nursing graduates, especially those who work in hospitals. In fact, new nurse graduates account for more than half of the turnover rate in some hospitals, according to a study published in 2007 by Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing researchers.

“There really are multiple reasons for [the first-year exodus],” says Patricia Benner, RN, PhD, professor at the University of California, San Francisco and a senior scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. “One is that nursing practice is incredibly complex. Over the past 60 years, the transfer of responsibility to nursing from medicine has been incredible. I think society doesn’t typically recognize that.”

Because the sickest patients are in the hospital, hospital RNs need good clinical judgment and the ability to recognize when a patient needs immediate intervention — challenges that are especially pronounced in a nurse’s first year of employment.

Despite the Odds, I Became a Nurse, Nursetogether.com

Teen mothers are more likely to drop out of high school than girls who wait to have children.

Statistics will tell you that only 40 percent of teenagers who have children before age 18 move forward and graduate from high school.  Statistics also say that only 1.5% will have a college degree by age 30.*  Teen mothers are more likely to end up on welfare (nearly 80 percent of unmarried teen mothers end up on welfare according to the March of Dimes) and will wind up living in poverty with their children.**

Glad I didn’t pay much attention to statistics.

Despite becoming pregnant as a teenager, I didn't drop out of high school; I graduated early, enrolled in college and became a nurse.

Doctorate Nurses and Credential Creep, Advanceweb.com:"The recent decision by the nursing profession to transition to doctoral preparation for all advanced practice nurses marks merely the latest health profession to establish itself on the doctoral level. In a position statement released in October, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Task Force on the Clinical Doctorate calls for the four existing types of APNs—clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners—to be granted a practice-focused doctoral degree upon completion of training."

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education, Capella University:"A shortage of nursing faculty is a key reason U.S. nursing schools must turn away tens of thousands of qualified applicants each year. Capella's doctoral Nursing Education specialization is designed to prepare master's-level nurses to meet this growing need and to advance the field of nursing through doctoral research. The National League for Nursing recognizes that this PhD specialization in Nursing Education aligns with the Core Competencies for Nurse Educators©, using competencies that are integral to the Certified Nurse Educator® (CNE) exam. The curriculum includes such topics as advanced nursing theory and concepts, curriculum design and evaluation, teaching strategies, and classroom assessment. People likely to be interested in this specialization include nursing faculty members who want to pursue advanced faculty or leadership positions and nurses currently working in health care delivery who want to share their knowledge of nursing."

The Nurse Ph.D.: The Leaders in A Vital Profession, Carole A. Anderson, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, NursingPrograms.com:"Nurses are in high demand with all levels of education and experience, but there is no doubt that the nursing profession needs more nurses educated at the doctoral level—primarily as faculty and researchers. The national shortage of faculty will soon be critical, impacting educational programs and their ability to educate future generations of nurses. Currently, only about half of nursing faculty possess a doctorate degree. With many advances being made in the treatment of chronic illnesses, there is also a continuing need for research that assists patients in living with their illness. This research requires individual investigators who are prepared on the doctoral level."

Difficult Professional Choices: Deciding Between the PhD and the DNP in Nursing, Online Journal of Nursing of Issues in Nursing:"Although the PhD has been the traditional doctoral degree in nursing, nurses now have a choice between that degree and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. An Internet-based exploratory survey of DNP students (n= 69) investigated the motivation of nurses to pursue doctoral education, factors that influenced the decision between the two degrees, rationale for choosing the DNP program, and career plans after graduation. A majority reported considering the PhD but decided the DNP would be more appropriate for their professional and personal goals. Nursing education was ranked as an important career intention for 55% of respondents, dispelling the concern that the DNP will increase the shortage of nursing faculty. The results indicate that the DNP degree is a desirable option for clinically oriented nurses considering doctoral education and provides nurses with a choice of educational pathways for their professional careers."

Moving Forward Together: The Practice Doctorate in Nursing, Online Journal of Nursing of Issues in Nursing:"Societal drivers, as well as trends in education and health care, are advancing the practice doctorate in nursing. For nurse practitioner preparation, the current resurgence of interest in the practice doctorate could precipitate change that mimics the evolution from post-basic certificate to Master’s level education. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) is a resource for the study of the practice doctorate relative to quality nurse practitioner education. This article will offer some insights into the movement toward the practice doctorate by describing, from the NP perspective, the societal impetus for change, the historical perspective of NP and doctoral education, the 4 Ws (why, what, where, and when) of the movement, and some of the myths and realities about the practice doctorate."

The Nurse Ph.D.: A Vital Profession Needs Leaders, Petersons:"There is no doubt that education is the path for a nurse to achieve greater clinical expertise. Choosing a Doctoral Nursing Program: Considerations for an Online Program: Western Institute of Nursing:"Technological innovations have provided enhanced opportunities for students to obtain advanced educational degrees through the convenience of online learning. This paper will discuss some points to consider when contemplating pursuing a nursing doctoral degree through a totally online program. It is based on my personal my experience after completing two years of course work in an online program. Although it is written to help others in their decision-making, I also wanted to demonstrate that after two years of completely online classes, I have been able to retain a questionable sense of humor!"

Thinking About a Doctorate in Nursing? Western Institute of Nursing:"Many people wonder what the career advantages are in obtaining a doctoral education in nursing. This is quite apparent from the paucity of nurses currently pursuing the degree; of the more than 2.5 million nurses in the U.S., less than 1% have a nursing doctorate (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2002). Enrollment data compiled by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2004) found an increase of 5.6% (171 students) for a total enrollment of 3,229 doctoral nursing students for the 2003-2004 school year. However, graduations from doctoral programs decreased by 9.9% (44 graduates) for the same academic year. Thus, it will take several years for the increase in doctorally-prepared nurses to be an influence on the severe shortage."

Doctorate in Nursing, Wikipedia:"There are several doctorate-level degrees in nursing: Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP or DrNP), Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc, DNS or DSN) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing. The Doctor of Nursing (ND) degree has been phased out and most universities have transitioned to the DNP. The PhD and DNS degrees are generally considered research-oriented degrees, whereas the DNP is a practice-oriented or clinical doctorate."

How to call in sick without jeopardizing your job - CNN.com

Eric McCoole, 38, called in sick on St. Patrick's Day in 2000, and no, he didn't have a cold, the flu, or a sinus infection. He didn't even have the sniffles.

"Being of Irish descent, I wanted to take the day off," says McCoole, a government employee in Alpine, California.

He called early enough so he could leave a message and skip the awkward talk with his boss. "The next day a supervisor came over the PA system and announced, 'Two people called in sick yesterday, St. Patrick's Day: Eric McCoole and Brian O'Malley.' Luckily, everyone laughed," McCoole recalls. "He said next year we should flip a coin to decide who takes that day off."

Ah, the good old days. Few folks in today's workplace are calling in sick even if they have a cold, the flu, or a sinus infection. Given the economic meltdown, the highest unemployment rate in years, and layoffs around every corner, workers are more likely to drag themselves into the office even when they feel like death warmed over.

Health.com: Is it a cold, flu, or something else?

The fear? If they call in sick, they won't have an office to drag themselves into the next day.

Why you should call in sick

While they might feel heroic, sick employees who come to work -- a phenomenon known as presenteeism -- can actually hurt companies. Even if you're not scheduled to scrub into the ER and save lives, you can still endanger others by showing up for work in a cloud of germs.

"You always have to weigh the risks and the benefits," says Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, M.D., a spokesperson for the Infectious Diseases Society of America and president and CEO of the New Island Hospital in Bethpage, New York.

Glatt suggests asking yourself, "What greater good can I do by being there?" If it's not essential for you to go in, and you know you won't be productive, stay home.

Health.com: Is your job making you sick?

People who are coughing or sneezing (symptoms of illnesses spread by airborne transmission) should probably stay home anyhow, according to Glatt, as should anyone with an open wound or those incapable of keeping good hygiene. "We have to be conscious that we are not only taking care of our own health, but the health of other people," he says.

Slow job market for nurses expected to rebound | Standard-Examiner – Ogden, Layton, Brigham, Weber, Davis, Sports, Entertainment, Dining, Utah Jazz, Real Salt Lake, Ogden Raptors, Top of Utah News

The recession has finally caught up to nursing, the so-called "recession-proof" job. But experts say the demand for nurses won't be slowed for long.

Evidence of the now-lagging nursing job market is anecdotal and inconsistent; no definitive figures exist. But Betty Sue McGarvey, president of the Baptist College of Health Sciences in Memphis, Tenn., doesn't need a thermometer to know it's cold outside.

Most of her nursing students used to have job offers even before they graduated. Finding employment now can take months.

"We encourage our students and tell them the stability is still there, but it may take you longer to find that first position you want," McGarvey said.

The job-market cool-down follows a frenzied surge in 2007-2008 in which hospitals alone added an estimated 243,000 nurses, according to researchers from Vanderbilt University, the Congressional Budget Office and Dartmouth College. The spike was the largest two-year increase in nursing jobs over the prior 30 years.

But the recession slowly ate away the health-care industry's past insulation.

"In previous recessions, nursing always managed to ride out of the economic storm with little damage," said University of Memphis health care economist Cyril Chang. "But this time, the length and depth of the recession are so severe that even nursing has not been immune to consequences of the economic downturn."

Many in the health care industry tightened their belts and either laid nurses off or reduced their hours, Chang said.

There are always exceptions. The Memphis VA Medical Center, for example, is in the process of hiring 70 nurses. The Veterans Administration's nurse-to-patient ratio changed, said Marilyn Kerkhoff, the hospital's director of nursing. The thinking, she said, is that more nurses on staff translates into better patient outcomes.

"At a time when many are letting go of nurses, we're ... doing what we feel is the right thing for the patients," Kerkhoff said.

A job fair for registered nurses attracted 90 applicants to the VA two weeks ago. Nineteen were hired.

Experts say the current slowdown won't be a long-term, prevailing trend.

Vanderbilt's Peter Buerhaus, a national expert on nursing employment, predicts a national shortage of 260,000 nurses by 2025 -- primarily because the enormous baby boom generation will need more care as it enters old age. More nurses will also be needed to treat the 32 million Americans insured in 2014 under the health reform law.

Buerhaus found that nurses over age 50 filled more than three-fourths of new nursing jobs created between 2001 and 2008.

"If the economy improves, we're expecting ... a great exit of seasoned nurses who have either put off retirement or have reduced their hours," said Sandra Hugueley, chief nursing officer at Methodist Extended Care Hospital.

That would bring an even bigger nursing shortage.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives and the National League for Nursing recently issued a statement expressing their concern.

"Diminishing the pipeline of future nurses may put the health of many Americans at risk, particularly those from rural and underserved communities, and leave our health care delivery system unprepared to meet the demand for essential nursing services," the statement said.
