Tips for Your First Year as a Nurse - Associated Content from Yahoo! - associatedcontent.com

When I first got out of nursing school and was hired as a Medical-Surgical RN in a local hospital I began searching to find tips that might help me make the transition from student nurse to RN. I wanted a list of  specific things I could do to help me learn to care for a greater patient load without an instructor there to back me up. I was disappointed that I could not find a lot of information regarding this crucial transition. I later composed the following list of tips and tidbits. I sincerely hope these prove to be useful to someone else who is in the same shoes I once wore.

1. Be early for work. If you receive report at 7:00 am be there at 6:30am. Most nurses appreciate you relieving them early and are more than happy to give you report. In the two years I worked as a Med-Surg nurse I worked over only twice and that was for a maximum of fifteen minutes only. I found that getting a jump on my day enabled me to start out ahead.

What we are

Careerjet is a job search engine designed to make the process of finding a job on the internet easier for the user. It maps the huge selection of job offerings available on the internet in one extensive database by referencing job listings originating from company websites, recruitment agency websites and large specialist recruitment sites. Many local nursing grads find local jobs, Utah

A couple of years ago, finding a job as a nurse was a snap.

It's a bit harder now, but thanks to a healthy relationship between the hospitals in Utah County and the local nursing schools, local grads are still doing OK.

Utah had the lowest registered nurse vacancy rate in the country as of May, said David Clark, Intermountain's CEO for the urban south region. Much of that he attributed to the natural feeding system set up because of BYU, UVU, Provo College, Eagle Gate College, Ameritech and other programs that train qualified nurses.

Intermountain Healthcare is the largest health care provider in the state and thus the largest employer of nurses as well.

And he has no problem admitting that Intermountain is a little partial to the nurses who trained "right there in our backyard."

It's not that the process becomes easy, he said.

"They have to earn it based on their own merits," Clark said.

Despite the Odds, I Became a Nurse, Nursetogether.com

Teen mothers are more likely to drop out of high school than girls who wait to have children.

Statistics will tell you that only 40 percent of teenagers who have children before age 18 move forward and graduate from high school.  Statistics also say that only 1.5% will have a college degree by age 30.*  Teen mothers are more likely to end up on welfare (nearly 80 percent of unmarried teen mothers end up on welfare according to the March of Dimes) and will wind up living in poverty with their children.**

Glad I didn’t pay much attention to statistics.

Despite becoming pregnant as a teenager, I didn't drop out of high school; I graduated early, enrolled in college and became a nurse.

Integrating New Nursing Grads, Nursetogether.com

Do you remember what it was like to be a new nursing graduate?  One day you were a student, and ‘poof,’ one day you were a nurse.  Expectations ran high and responsibilities ran even higher.  The cushion of ‘just being a student’ and having your instructor ultimately be responsible is gone in an instant.  Do you remember the anxiety, fear and unsure feelings of those first few months?

When you are well into your own career and overloaded with your own patients, it is easy to forget what it was like in the beginning.  But wait, we need your active participation to help us integrate our new staff, now more than ever!   In a profession that is one of the most trusted and respected in the world, it is embarrassing that we have a phenomenon known as ‘nurses eating their young’ - the well known, but little talked about, epidemic of senior nurses making work life even more challenging for their young counterparts.  I am hopeful that the general public is unaware of this, as it would be rather embarrassing for us!

Why do you think this exists?  Do we feel that new grads must ‘pay their dues,' that because no one supported us, we don’t need to support them?  Is it our own insecurities?  Are we worried they have newer, fresher knowledge, and that they will want our jobs?

Whatever our reasons, whether conscious or not, many of us are hurting, rather than helping, our new nurses integrate into our institutions.  With the shortage of nurses so prevalent, wouldn’t it be in OUR best interest to help these ladies and gentlemen through their first, and possibly most challenging, year in the profession?

Nurse Recruitment and Retention: Can New Nursing Grads Find Work?

When I was speaking at a hospital, talking to recently recruited nurses, I heard their frustrations in not being able to work in the area of their choice.

Indeed, where once nursing grads could essentially get their first choices and select from several attractive job opportunities, some looking to enter our profession have had to settle for a position different from their goals.

Wise new grads will take this job, giving the best care possible as team player. When the recession ends and cut backs are eased, they can transfer into their position of choice.

The recession has finally caught up to nursing, the so-called "recession-proof" job. But experts say the demand for nurses won't be slowed for long.

Evidence of the now-lagging nursing job market is anecdotal and inconsistent; no definitive figures exist. But Betty Sue McGarvey, president of the Baptist College of Health Sciences in Memphis, Tenn., doesn't need a thermometer to know it's cold outside.

Most of her nursing students used to have job offers even before they graduated. Finding employment now can take months.

"We encourage our students and tell them the stability is still there, but it may take you longer to find that first position you want," McGarvey said.

The job-market cool-down follows a frenzied surge in 2007-2008 in which hospitals alone added an estimated 243,000 nurses, according to researchers from Vanderbilt University, the Congressional Budget Office and Dartmouth College. The spike was the largest two-year increase in nursing jobs over the prior 30 years.

But the recession slowly ate away the health-care industry's past insulation.

"In previous recessions, nursing always managed to ride out of the economic storm with little damage," said University of Memphis health care economist Cyril Chang. "But this time, the length and depth of the recession are so severe that even nursing has not been immune to consequences of the economic downturn."

Many in the health care industry tightened their belts and either laid nurses off or reduced their hours, Chang said.

There are always exceptions. The Memphis VA Medical Center, for example, is in the process of hiring 70 nurses. The Veterans Administration's nurse-to-patient ratio changed, said Marilyn Kerkhoff, the hospital's director of nursing. The thinking, she said, is that more nurses on staff translates into better patient outcomes.

"At a time when many are letting go of nurses, we're ... doing what we feel is the right thing for the patients," Kerkhoff said.

A job fair for registered nurses attracted 90 applicants to the VA two weeks ago. Nineteen were hired.

Experts say the current slowdown won't be a long-term, prevailing trend.

Vanderbilt's Peter Buerhaus, a national expert on nursing employment, predicts a national shortage of 260,000 nurses by 2025 -- primarily because the enormous baby boom generation will need more care as it enters old age. More nurses will also be needed to treat the 32 million Americans insured in 2014 under the health reform law.

Buerhaus found that nurses over age 50 filled more than three-fourths of new nursing jobs created between 2001 and 2008.

"If the economy improves, we're expecting ... a great exit of seasoned nurses who have either put off retirement or have reduced their hours," said Sandra Hugueley, chief nursing officer at Methodist Extended Care Hospital.

That would bring an even bigger nursing shortage.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives and the National League for Nursing recently issued a statement expressing their concern.

"Diminishing the pipeline of future nurses may put the health of many Americans at risk, particularly those from rural and underserved communities, and leave our health care delivery system unprepared to meet the demand for essential nursing services," the statement said.
