Two-thirds of states cut mental healthcare funds: advocacy group | Reuters

Two-thirds of states cut mental health funding from their general fund budgets over the last two years, according to a report released by a mental illness advocacy group on Wednesday.

Kentucky with 47 percent, Alaska with 35 percent, and South Carolina and Arizona both with 23 percent made the largest percentage cuts to mental health spending in their general fund budgets, which do not include federal Medicaid funding, the study by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) found.

"Cutting mental health means that costs only get shifted to emergency rooms, schools, police, local courts, jails and prisons," said NAMI executive director Michael Fitzpatrick. "The taxpayer still pays the bill."

"Some states are trying to hold the line or make progress, but most are cutting deep. This stands in contrast to the intense national concern about the mental health care system following the Arizona tragedy two months ago," he said.

Admitting harm protects patients - Sunday, March 27, 2011 | 2 a.m. - Las Vegas Sun

As Nevada legislators debate this week whether to require hospitals to publicly report when they harm patients, they could learn a lot from Paul Levy’s experience in pulling back the veil of hospital secrecy.

Levy became a revolutionary figure in medicine when, as CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess — then the weak sibling among Harvard University’s teaching hospitals — he began blogging about injuries and infections suffered by his hospital’s patients. His competitors eventually followed suit and now, with Massachusetts law imposing transparency, they acknowledge openness has brought greater accountability and a more focused commitment to protecting patients.

“It’s not just fear of public embarrassment” that drives the improvements, said Dr. Ken Sands, chairman of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s health care quality department. “It’s an easy way to show something is a priority and is deserving of attention.”

Philadelphia School Battles Students’ Bad Diets - NYTimes.com

Tatyana Gray bolted from her house and headed toward her elementary school. But when she reached the corner store where she usually gets her morning snack of chips or a sweet drink, she encountered a protective phalanx of parents with bright-colored safety vests and walkie-talkies.

Multimedia

The scourge the parents were combating was neither the drugs nor the violence that plagues this North Philadelphia neighborhood. It was bad eating habits.

“Candy!” said one of the parents, McKinley Harris, peering into a small bag one child carried out of the store. “That’s not food.”

The parents standing guard outside the Oxford Food Shop are foot soldiers in a national battle over the diets of children that has taken on new fervor. With 20 percent of the nation’s children obese, the United States Department of Agriculture has proposed new standards for federally subsidized school meals that call for more balanced meals and, for the first time, a limit on calories. The current standard specifies only a minimum calorie count, which some schools meet by adding sweet foods.

Nurses with disabilities going back to work, Donna Maheady, ARNP, ExceptionalNurse.com

The melody to “Where have all the flowers gone?” by Pete Seeger could easily be sung with the words “Where have all the nurses gone?”

Part of the answer rests with nurses with disabilities who have left the workforce. Many are eager to return to patient care but are “scared silent.”

Hospitals have varied ways of supporting nurses with disabilities. The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act has helped, but hearts and minds are slow to change.

How do I know this? Well, it all began with my daughter and a carpenter….

LeaveNoNurseBehind.COM, Donna Maheady, Ed.D., ARNP Exceptionalnurse.com Disability Resource

Welcome to LeaveNoNurseBehind.com

In the midst of a national nursing shortage, many nurses who can and want to work are being denied the opportunity. They are being pushed out of jobs and turned away from unfilled positions, all because they have disabilities.

Eleven nurses who defied disability tell their personal stories of courage and determination in the face of stigma and discrimination, proving that nurses with disabilities have the ability to successfully fill the jobs that so desperately need filling.

A car accident. A fall. A stroke. Depression. Disability can happen to anyone and at any time. By knowing the ins and outs of disability laws as they relate to those in the nursing profession and taking the measures outlined in this book, you can ensure that you will be prepared should disability ever happen to you.

This book serves as both an inspiration and as a practical guide for nurses living and working with disabilities and for students with disabilities pursuing careers in nursing. Nursing with a disability is a challenge, but with proper planning, the right knowledge and perseverance, it is not impossible. The nurses who share their stories here are living proof of that.

Is Your Child in Trouble with Drugs? Step One, Get a Screening and Assesment

A screening and assessment is used to get a complete picture of your child’s relationship to drugs to make sure that they will be referred to the right level and type of treatment.

The assessment should be conducted by a certified addiction professional , an Addictionologist, or a doctor who is accredited by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, (ASAM). Problems with addiction are a specialized field and a specialist should be used.

The important part is to make sure you are not operating on emotion alone and are working in conjunction with a trained professional who can assess the degree of the problem and lay out the steps necessary in your child’s care.

An assessment helps determine:

  1. How severe your child’s problem is
  2. The level of treatment the child needs (e.g. early intervention, outpatient, intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization, residential / inpatient services and
  3. The types of services the child needs

'Dispense As Written' Prescriptions May Add $7.7 Billion To Annual Health Care Costs, Researchers Found

About 5% of prescriptions submitted by CVS Caremark Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) members in a 30-day period during 2009 included a "dispense as written" (DAW) designation.

This practice - whereby doctors or patients demand the dispensing of a specific brand-name drug and not a generic alternative - costs the health care system up to $7.7 billion annually, according to a new study by researchers at Harvard University, Brigham and Women's Hospital and CVS Caremark. Moreover, these requests reduce the likelihood that patients actually fill new prescriptions for essential chronic conditions.

In a study published this week in the American Journal of Medicine, the researchers demonstrate that DAW designations for prescriptions have important implications for medication adherence. They found that when starting new essential therapy, chronically ill patients with DAW prescriptions were 50 to 60 percent less likely to actually fill the more expensive brand name prescriptions than generics. "Although dispense as written requests would seem to reflect a conscious decision by patients or their physicians to use a specific agent, the increased cost sharing that results for the patient may decrease the likelihood that patients actually fill their prescriptions," the researchers said.
